Nationwide & statewide
Marine For Life Network (Official)
The national program page. Marines, veterans, and family members can request a referral to their regional representative using the form at the bottom of that page. It routes to whoever covers where you are landing.
Marine For Life Network on LinkedIn
The program's own page, plus the groups behind it — one national group, four regional ones, and several built around particular industries. Southern California and San Diego both sit in the West region. Worth joining before you need it: the point of a network is that it already exists when the question comes up.
DD-214 — Request Your Separation Document
The document every other door on this page asks for. Free from the National Archives through their eVetRecs tool — you'll verify your identity with ID.me first. Ask for the Member-4 copy: it shows character of service, which is the version VA and employers actually want. Never pay a company for this. The Archives provides it free, and if you're filing for VA benefits, VA pulls your DD-214 for you.
milConnect — Recently Separated
If you left service in the last few years, your records may still sit with your branch rather than the National Archives, and milConnect is the faster route. It's also where a Post-9/11 GI Bill transfer to a spouse or child is requested — and that has to be approved while you are still serving, so handle it before your CAC goes away.
Staying In — Active Duty to the Marine Corps Reserve
If you do nothing at your EAS you land in the
Individual Ready Reserve by default — non-drilling, no pay, no points, still recallable until your eight-year obligation is up. The drilling reserve, the
SMCR, is something you have to go and ask for. Prior Service Recruiting handles affiliation:
mcrcpsr@marines.usmc.mil. Ask about the
Direct Affiliation Program, which moves you straight from active duty into a reserve billet, and about affiliation bonuses for short MOSs. Start this
before you separate — re-affiliating after a break is a longer road than never leaving.
What Drilling Actually Looks Like
One weekend a month and an annual training period of two weeks to a month, at a reserve center near where you live — units sit in 48 states, DC, and Puerto Rico. What it buys you beyond the paycheck: retirement points that keep counting toward a 20-year letter, access to TRICARE Reserve Select at a fraction of civilian premiums, and MGIB-SR eligibility. Ask your career planner for the Reserve Opportunities and Obligations Brief while you still have a chain of command to ask.
VA — Benefits, Healthcare & Claims
Start here for healthcare enrollment, disability claims, education benefits, and home loans. Set up a VA.gov account with Login.gov or ID.me and you can file claims, track status, and pull your own records in one place.
DoW SkillBridge — Transition Internships
Train with a civilian employer during your last 180 days on active duty while still drawing full pay, BAH, and TRICARE. Commander approval is required and every branch now caps the length by rank, so open the conversation 9 to 12 months out. Drilling reservists generally don't qualify unless on 180+ day Title 10 orders.
VR&E — Veteran Readiness & Employment
Chapter 31. Tuition, training, and job placement for veterans with a service-connected disability that gets in the way of working. Broader than the GI Bill — it can fund retraining, equipment, or self-employment — and it doesn't spend your GI Bill months.
CalVet — California Veteran Benefits
California benefits stacked on top of federal ones: property tax exemptions for disabled veterans, college fee waivers for dependents, veterans homes, and CalVet home and farm loans. California residency required.
San Diego County
County Office of Military & Veterans Affairs
Accredited county representatives who prepare and file your VA claims for free, follow them to a decision, and build appeals. Walk-in centers around the county. San Diego has the second largest veteran population in California — use them instead of paying a claims agent.
Workshops for Warriors — Job Training
A nonprofit school at 2970 Main Street in San Diego running accelerated 16-week CNC machining and welding programs. Graduates earn credentials from the American Welding Society, NIMS, Mastercam, and SolidWorks. Open to veterans, transitioning service members, and wounded warriors; VA education benefits accepted. (619) 550-1620.
Riverside County
Riverside County Veterans' Services
Established in 1930 and serving roughly 150,000 county veterans. Free benefits counseling, claims preparation, and appeals from accredited county representatives, plus referrals for medical care, education, and employment. Main office at 4360 Orange Street in Riverside, with satellite offices countywide.
Los Angeles County
LA County Military & Veterans Affairs
County advocates for veterans, dependents, and survivors on benefit entitlements. They also run the Veteran Peer Access Network, which pairs you with a trained veteran peer for help across housing, mental health, employment, and legal issues.
